Reuseable Beauty: NOCIBÉ researches a deposit system for cosmetic products as part of a French industry alliance

As Europe's leading omnichannel destination for premium beauty we take our responsibility towards our colleagues, customers, suppliers and the world we live in seriously. We want to be a role model in sustainability in the beauty retail sector with our four strong brands DOUGLAS, NOCIBÉ, Niche Beauty and parfumdreams. And we can be measured against this standard throughout Europe, as an example from France shows.

NOCIBÉ, the French subsidiary of the DOUGLAS Group has joined an alliance of eleven French companies from the cosmetics industry that are researching the opportunities and challenges of introducing a deposit system for cosmetic products. NOCIBÉ is responding to the initiative of Circul'R, a French pioneer in the circular economy. The alliance has been officially operational since December 2023 and is made up of nine brands: L'Oréal, CHANEL Parfums Beauté, Pierre Fabre, Laboratoires SVR, Yves Rocher, Clarins, Melvita, La Rosée, Aromazone, and two retailers – Sephora and NOCIBÉ. All share a common vision: the reuse of cosmetics packaging with harmonized standards between the brands and manufacturers.

NOCIBÈ’s Pilot Project in Northern France: Testing reusable Cosmetic Packaging

The trend shows, that on both European and French level, there is a movement towards promoting reusable cosmetic products. This initiative aligns with broader environmental goals and consumer preferences for sustainable practices. To evaluate the feasibility of this approach, NOCIBÈ has launched the pilot project “la boucle beauté” in 22 of its stores located in Northern France. Since mid-January, these stores have been accepting empty cosmetic packaging of the participating brands returned by customers. The project aims to gather valuable data on customer behavior and acceptance of the deposit system for reusable packaging. The feedback collected during this period will be crucial in understanding the practicality of such a system and identifying any potential challenges that may need to be addressed before a wider implementation.

Our Commitment to Sustainability and Environmental Responsibility

The DOUGLAS Group is committed to reducing its environmental footprint: From minimizing energy consumption in the stores and offices to cutting waste and carbon emissions across the supply chain. We are committed for all of our packaging to be recyclable, recycled, or reusable. Therefore, the DOUGLAS Group has published a packaging policy for its Corporate Brands with concrete measures to reduce waste and to make the packaging of our Corporate Brands products more sustainable in line with our suppliers.

We know that there is still a lot to do in the cosmetics industry. Nevertheless, the example of NOCIBÉ shows that we are well equipped on our journey towards being a leading beauty retailer in sustainability.
